Consumer Price Index

Abstract

The first section of this chapter provides a consumer price index for foreign travel in the United States. It emanates from a new historical balance of payments for the United States. The second section is a review of a book that takes a broad historical view of the official consumer price index and its responsible authority (Bureau of Labor Statistics). The book goes behind statistical analysis and highlights the tensions between technical work and interest-groups’ activities, or, more generally, between economic and political considerations in the development and use of the CPI.
