Abstract

Individual countries have benefited very differently from globalization. With regard to income increase China is the biggest winner while the US fares rather poorly. Emerging countries need more globalization to get on their feet. But globalization itself needs to change. Exports should be substituted by foreign direct investment and dematerialization should be promoted. A major challenge is to find the best location worldwide for each activity, i.e. to improve location-competence assimilation. Travel can only partially be substituted by digital communication.
