Abstract

Currently, many challenges must be appraised to turn the ASEAN Community into more than just a daydream. The existing circumstances of the economy, politics and education in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is still insufficient to reach the vision laid out in the ASEAN Charter and the goals outlined in its plans: the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC), the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and the ASEAN Political–Security Community (APSC). Overlooking the concerns and resolutions contributed by academic research and reports, media publications and other sources would lead to considerable growth and development predicaments in various regional spheres. Therefore, this chapter will specify and focus on the setbacks that ASEAN governments must tackle and include in their policies to accomplish the goals of the AEC, ASCC and APSC. Section ‘ASCC’s Educational Challenges’ discusses the ASCC’s educational difficulties, while section ‘The AEC’s Economic Challenges’ defines the AEC’s economic dilemmas. Section ‘The APSC’s Political Challenges’ lays out the APSC’s political hurdles and, finally, section ‘Critical Thinking Questions’ considers critical questions about the overall topic before conclusions are drawn.
