Abstract

Chapter 2 describes the framework within which social relations develop in Jamaica spanning slavery and the colonial era. Beckford (1972) described this framework as a plantation system, under which the entire society was organized for the sole purpose of producing sugar for export to Britain. Within this system, Harrison (2001) asserted that no effort was made to establish the “basis of a civil society”.
