Abstract

Housing financeHousing finances is a specialized field of economics and finance, and its characteristics vary broadly across the globe based on the socio-economic profiles of the countries. Mostly, defined by mortgage markets, the housing financeHousing finances market in developing countries like PakistanPakistan is driven by underlying complex frameworks of social life and mindsets of the beneficiaries, making it a difficult subject to understand. Currently, PakistanPakistan is facing a crucial shortage of 10 million housing units. Affordable housingAffordable housing projects from the public sector never worked massively due to payment deadlock from low-income groups as beneficiaries. The major reason behind this is their inability to pay the housing unit cost through down payments and instalments. This chapter describes important concepts and processes that operate the finance programs and products in the Pakistani housing marketHousing market with key emphasis on the beneficiary's position. Discussions based on primary and secondary data unveiled the concepts and processes associated with housing financeHousing finances mechanisms in the local context. It presents a complex synthesis of social underpinnings within the housing financeHousing finances models and offers key suggestions for the way forward to achieve accessibilityAccessibility.
