Rural Housing Programme (Indira Awaas Yojana) in West Bengal, India: Trends of Achievements

Abstract

RuralRural housing is one of the significant ruralRural facets, as it represents the socio-economic conditions of an individual or the ruralRural society as a whole. Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY) is one of the six mechanisms of ‘Bharat Nirman’ that tries to overcome the problems of shortage of housing shortage in ruralRural IndiaIndia. This is an essential ruralRural development scheme in IndiaIndia. The flagship programme for ruralRural housing was launched in the year 1985–86, where the sole objective was to construct ruralRural housing for the economically deprived ruralRural people/families. The programme is being run by the ruralRural local self-governmentGovernment institutions since its inception. The implementation of this programme is related to different factors. The paper analyses the district-wise performance of the state of West BengalWest Bengal, which was one of the pioneer states of IndiaIndia in respect of the progress of ruralRural development during the past decade of the twentieth century and early decade of the twenty-first century along with the related causes and consequences.
