Abstract

This chapter aims to enhance our understanding of the world of yachting by addressing the four themes pertinent to the industry and experienced by the crew: exploration, expectation, captivity and reality. Being part of a small and niche industry, often well concealed from a general public eye, crew at the same time live truly global lives. Such juxtapositioned reality evokes a range of attitudes and perceptions of the industry among yachties, often experienced on a scale of contrasting and contradicting emotions, localities and memories. Linking the discussion to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and exploring the yachting environment from the perspectives of crew and owners, the author explores the impact of the industry on luxury yacht practitioners from a personal and psychological perspectives. Reflecting on own professional experiences, the author highlights challenges and advantages typically encountered by the crew while also acknowledging the impact of the industry on local communities in yachting destinations.
