Abstract

Despite the importance of positive social impact measurement in social innovation (SI) research, there still exist challenges in establishing ways to measure social impact both theoretically and empirically. The challenges in establishing measurement are exacerbated when we consider gender—a key determinant for social change as outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG5). The approaches developed to fill in the social impact measurement gaps are often heterogeneous, and lacking in focus. Understanding social impact as the enhancement of agency and capabilities, this chapter draws on the experiences of women living in low-income areas in Kenya, to outline their lived experiences and establishes social innovations potential for the realisation of SDG5 [Relevant SDGs: SDG5: Gender Equality; SDG17: Partnerships for the Goals].
