Conceptualizing Resilience in Small Island States

Abstract

The positioning of Caribbean small islands states as vulnerable territories has led to an almost automatic association with the term resilience. In its earliest articulation, SIDS’ resilience was linked to its ability to cope with the effects of natural hazards. However, the current literature has broadened the island resilience focus to include social and economic resilience. The question that this chapter explores is whether these analytical frames are sufficient to analyze the contestations around resilience. The chapter therefore examines conceptualizations of resilience, its determinants and critiques, and the ways and extent to which these ideas have been integrated into SIDS and tourism resilience research and practice. Questions are asked about the binary reality of tourism’s inherent vulnerability and SIDS’ tourism overdependence, whether resilience is at all possible, and whether the Caribbean region is ready to confront transformation as a critical outcome of resilience.
