Abstract

The concept of a Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4), with its emphasis on digitalization, has led some researchers and businesspeople to suggest that a new approach to management is needed. This paper considers some of these suggestions and finds that while there is merit in some of these ideas, there are quite a few caveats both major and minor. The main caveat is that a modern economy consists of more than new digitalized activities and many basic pre-digitalization activities will continue to be performed and that these will continue to require more traditional management methods. Moreover, many of the suggestions for management in the Industry 4 era are not really new and more in the form of traditional management.
