Abstract

Conservative and progressive forces clashed for most of the twentieth century. A new industrial bourgeoisie emerged stronger than ever and worked forces to take the reins of economic policy. Together, a growing nationalist sentiment boosted social and economic sectors’ will to make Brazil a global powerhouse, attempting to change its position as a raw materials’ provider in the world division of labour. This way, rising political and economic elites alike strategised a country walking the development path on its own feet. The era of import substitution industrialisation dominated the development narrative towards constructing a de facto independent country. This chapter explores the outcomes of that endeavour.
