Abstract

In this section I want to show that you can increase the security of hashed passwords with the right choice of hashing algorithm. Password hashing, which is sometimes also referred to as password encryption, is done by applying a non-invertible hashing function to the clear text password of a user. The purpose of using such functions is that the provider itself cannot decrypt the user’s hashed password, which is stored in the provider’s database. And neither should a hacker who has gained access to the database of the provider. I will show that password hacking can still be performed at low financial cost and with little computing time, if the chosen hashing algorithm is weak. I am inspired to write this article from my own professional experience, as a raw data analyst in lawful telecommunication interception, and as an information security specialist in banking projects.
