Abstract

The traditional approach to work-life balance has always placed home on a pedestal as the place for respite and recovery. This approach is outdated and unrealistic. It fails to acknowledge that, like work, life at home features a range of tasks, relationships and cognitions that both enhance and deplete our energy. Some may find the structure of work a welcome escape from the chaos of raising children and others may spend their days yearning to get home to return to their passion project. Indeed, every individual’s preferences and needs are different, so a personalised approach to designing the home domain is also necessary. By applying crafting approaches to the home domain, individuals can design a life which features balance both at work and at home. Beyond this, crafting in the home domain offers individuals’ mechanisms to manage their well-being more effectively through consideration of resources and demands. It also enables the development of personal identity through exploration of strengths and personal drives. Practical ways to craft the home domain are explained, including exercises, discussion topics and prompts for self-reflection. Similar to team-crafting at work, opportunities to craft with loved ones, family and friends are also explained.
