Enabling Job Crafting, a Call to Action

Translating conceptual understanding of mechanisms like job crafting into the reality of the workplace can be daunting. This chapter breaks down the complexity to outline a structured approach to enabling crafting cultures throughout organisations. It acknowledges that job crafting cannot be enforced top-down as it is inherently employee-driven. It is for employees to take ownership of their roles. However, it also highlights the opportunities others can implement to make job crafting more likely; to create cultures where people craft. Those who can play a role range from the leadership and human resource teams, through to Occupational health, line managers and even team members. The proposed approach is evidence-based, informed by insights from research regarding the factors which influence the extent to which employees craft. The chapter is pragmatic in focus, offering suggestions for all to enable crafting including exercises, proposed process changes, cultural shifts, discussion frameworks, extensive conversation prompts and practical examples.
