Abstract

The study explores the barriers and facilitators in applying industry 4.0 in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) owned by graduate entrepreneurs in Malaysia. The study used semi-structured interviews with eight participants and identified financial limitations, limited knowledge and interest in Industry 4.0, lack of government supports, expensive installation of technologies, and uncertainty of return on investment as the major barriers in applying industry 4.0 in Malaysia. The study also identified government support, university courses on industry 4.0, financial support, infrastructure development, and collaboration among SMEs and other organizations as well as ensuring security of confidential information as the major facilitators in applying industry 4.0. This is the first empirical research that explores the barriers and facilitators in applying industry 4.0 in SMEs in Malaysia.
