Abstract

China’s economic approach has changed so drastically that it is largely unrecognizable today from the days of Mao Zedong. Some broad ideologies remain the same, but the role of market incentives has changed, and economic output has grown at rates that could hardly have been imagined in the 1960s and 1970s. Despite its pretenses to the contrary, China has not adopted a free market like the West. China’s economy is structured to achieve the regional and global goals of the Chinese Communist Party. This chapter illustrates the reasons for China’s economic approach, which is essential for understanding the harm that trade with China causes for Western institutions.
