Abstract

Tourism, the 3rd largest global industry, is closely associated with globalisation and recognised as one of the most influential determinants of sustainable growth worldwide. As the tourism industry flourishes, the host economy gets the opportunity to earn socio-economic benefits through the increase in the export of tourism-related products. On the contrary, globalisation also impacts the tourism industry’s expansion by providing better communication and easing travel barriers. However, many external forces, such as unplanned urbanisation and environmental degradation, surround the interrelationship between the tourism industry and globalisation. This chapter critically discusses and empirically argues that tourism can be a pathway for Bangladesh to increase the current globalisation trend’s benefits, however, at the expenses of increasing energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
