Abstract

Yogyakarta Special Province’s vulnerability to natural disasters necessitates effective disaster risk reduction strategies, while climate change exacerbates exposure to weather-related disasters. This chapter focuses on improving disaster risk reduction efforts aimed at building community resilience through an investigation of the influencing factors in the Stop Disaster Game for disaster management and disaster preparedness. Based on previous research into the use of such a game by at-risk communities in Yogyakarta, the chapter further aims to develop an empirical model of the decision-making process and raise awareness of the community’s vulnerability to natural hazards, and to enhance effective collaboration amongst relevant stakeholders. For this research, a descriptive-qualitative method was used and an online survey was conducted with 202 respondents. The results from the survey were analysed using the Partial Least Square Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM) to create an empirical model of decision-making processes based on the level of awareness of disaster risks and disaster management. The research found that the stronger the capacity of the at-risk community in understanding risk and to respond to disaster, the greater their willingness to contribute to and collaborate in the decision-making process for disaster risk reduction in Yogyakarta. This highlights the need to improve the community’s capacity and literacy regarding disaster risk, disaster preparedness, and disaster risk reduction. The gamification, in this context, is a potential strategy to facilitate the integration of community participation in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation planning.
