Abstract

Building an organizational structure depends on what an organization hopes to achieve. Organizational structures are the patterns of grouping tasks or individuals and determining reporting relationships. There are six building blocks to consider when building or changing an organizational structure: specialization, departmentalization, formalization, centralization, span of control, and chain of command. Different organizational structures commonly exist in sport, such as simple, hierarchical, matrix, self-managed, and blended structures. The history and culture of sport have impacted many organizational structures in sport and elements of coopetition and organizational size. However, recent shifts in the sports industry are also changing how sport organizations are structured.
