Abstract

The prevalent cultural phenomena and the growing number of the female workforce in Pakistan have a significant impact on their work-life balance. This study explores the impact of culture on the achievement of work-life balance among women in Pakistan. In order to achieve the study aim, we adopt a qualitative research method, using semi-structured interviews among 55 working women in Karachi. The themes were based on a six WLB matrix adopted from Hughes et al. (The wellbeing workout. Palgrave Macmillan, Cham, pp. 249–253, 2019): career and work, financial administration and management, partnership and romance, family and social life, health, fitness and recreation, and creativity and personal growth. Our findings reveal that culture plays a significant role in shaping the lives of women in Pakistan, which determines their ability to achieve work-life balance. The study also found social caste system as a strong predictor of work-life balance within the confines of the Pakistani culture.
