Framework-Oriented Interpretations of the Systemic Cycle and Institutional Theory

Abstract

This chapter sets the conceptual groundwork for a framework which utilizes both institutional approaches and the systemic cycle theory. The first section revisits the problematic issues in the systemic cycle theory, notably the lack of institutional and macroeconomic insights, and offers a Keynesian/demand-side reinterpretation of Arrighian concepts of extensive and intensive capitalism strategies. The second section surveys the open issues of institutional analysis, notably the problem of endogenous institutional change. It also offers a conceptual approach to institutions and institutional change in a manner consistent with a global-level theory of endogenous institutional change. The third section argues there are asymmetrical similarities in these faults and that the two research agendas can substantially benefit from interaction. This chapter enables a metatheoretical language that the framework of the next chapter can utilize in order to push the institutional change agenda onto the transnational level.
