Abstract

Odusola argues that food security is pivotal to all aspects of human development, ranging from human survival and cognitive learning to healthy living and a productive life. He examines the pervasive food security gaps (e.g. underweight, wasting, and stunting) and finds food security to be sensitive to several factors (e.g. population growth, farmers’ productivity, and cultural practices). Consequently, he shows how the continent can use agricultural productivity, multiple cropping, and agricultural transformation to nurture the seeds of food security. The chapter, however, cautions that achieving food security can be complex: the solution does not lie in agricultural transformation alone. Tapping the massive potential of agribusiness, projected to be bigger than the current GDP by 2030, can turn Africa to a powerful net food exporter.
