Abstract

When Frederick Jackson Turner presented his theory about the closing of the western frontier signaled an end of American civilization’s economic expansion in 1893, he would have been surprised to know that lessons from his Frontier Thesis have persisted well into the twenty-first century. Notably, the image of the frontier as a metaphor for human progress was invoked by John F. Kennedy in his presidential nomination acceptance speech at the Democratic party convention on July 15, 1960. At that time candidate Kenney famously said:
