Abstract

After the introductory meeting and you mutually decide to continue exploring a possible merger or acquisition, it’s time to start digging in with due diligence. At this point, how confident you are in moving forward may vary on a number of factors that are unique in every situation. One thing that does not vary, however, is that you’ll start having a series of scheduled phone calls and meetings to learn more about how you will align to achieve your goals. From a cultural and operational perspective, it also makes sense to begin introducing more members of your team to the fold. Even though your interaction with the whole team may be limited at this stage, this is when you will really start to see how people communicate and work together, how the business has operated, and what the future might hold in an integrated environment. In this chapter, Cynthia and I will outline the steps you should take to make the most of these interactions, including how to effectively introduce team members, how to quickly assess the other firm’s culture and how to protect your foundational values. We’ll also offer some lessons we’ve learned along the way.
