Abstract

Jamaica has been studied by many in growth, development and policy aficionados in a quest to understand the reason why a tiny country with such promise, such a track record of a large and unforgettable impact on culture, sport and sociopolitical philosophy could have difficulty in catalyzing it’s small, geographically promising location to enjoy high rates of economic growth. As a result, Jamaica’s problems have been well-ventilated from multiple analytical dimensions and have been prioritised into the so-called binding constraints through its longstanding relationship with the World Bank. This chapter provides an analysis of the extent to which these constraints have or have not been relaxed through the three successive borrowing relationships that Jamaica has entered into with the International Monetary Fund between 2010 and 2019 in order to explore the extent to which the necessary prerequisites for economic growth have been established.
