Abstract

This chapter continues to explore the development and implementation of techno-structural organizational-level interventions. The downsizing intervention is assessed in detail in this chapter, which follows on from the restructuring intervention in the previous chapter. Downsizing has been popularized in the 1990s with globalization and the intensive environmental changes and continues to influence employees and all organizations globally to varying degrees. More specifically, this chapter evaluates the importance and relevance of downsizing interventions in the field and practice of OD. The main downsizing tactics or strategies are also assessed. The key aspects of the downsizing process when developing and implementing this organizational change intervention are outlined and analysed. Finally, the challenges that emerge in the development and implementation of downsizing change plans are critically evaluated.
