Abstract

This chapter initiates Stage 5 of the OD (organizational development) process, that it, the development and implementation of appropriate organizational-level interventions. In this chapter, one of the two broad types of organizational-level interventions is introduced. Techno-structural organizational interventions are explored in detail. There are three main types of techno-structural interventions—restructuring, downsizing, and reengineering—which all interrelate. The restructuring intervention is assessed in this chapter. Restructuring represents one of the most popular and widely used organizational-level interventions as organizations continue to operate within tight global economies. More specifically, this chapter evaluates the importance and relevance of restructuring interventions in the field and practice of OD. The different types of structural design, the need for redesign, and planned changes are examined in detail. The key aspects of the restructuring process when developing and implementing this organizational change intervention are outlined and analysed. Finally, the challenges that emerge in the development and implementation of restructuring change plans are critically evaluated.
