Abstract

The wealth of research suggests positive tangible outcomes of food and beverage tourism on a community level, upon proper development. Not only does it enable the development of a sense of place, but also has the potential to generate economic benefits and support sustainable community and tourism development. This study examines the economic impacts of wine tourism in Northeast Iowa, USA. Until now, most of wine tourism research has focused on well-established wine regions/appellations, and less is known about the emerging wine culture in rural areas embracing opportunities of wine and tourism development en route to diversification from traditional agriculture. For many of these developing regions, the wine industry not only provides a value-added product but also offers agri-, wine, and food tourism opportunities.
