Abstract

Building a house in a field with no adjacent buildings—where cranes and materials can easily be brought in—is quite different from renovating a house in a city street (Figure 4-1). For the latter, existing walkways may need to be secured, and the delivery of materials will be much harder. In software projects, having no preexisting dependencies to worry about is like working in an open field. It will considerably reduce the effort and duration of the project. The term greenfield project is widely used to describe new projects, including software, that are free from any constraints caused by prior work.
