Abstract

What is genius? Most often, genius makes us think of people of superior intelligence who radically transformed the domains where they contributed and, as a result, enabled technological, economic, and societal advancements. But it hasn’t always been this understanding. In ancient Roman mythology, every man and woman was born with a unique genius, which, for men, took the form of a guardian angel following him from birth to death. The genius of women had the form of Juno, an ancient Roman goddess. After the Renaissance, the meaning of genius became more exclusive, with only a few people showing genius in their original and exclusive work.
