Abstract

Natural hazards do not occur isolated in an area as they can trigger other events due to hazard interrelations, which may result in severe disasters and consequences for a community. With this in mind, a geodatabase of devastating hazards has been constructed to store the locations and dates of occurrence for all types of hazards in Greece since 2014 using the local administrative boundaries, while each registered event is ascribed to the corresponding hazard contained in the UNDRR-ISC report for hazard definitions. Thereafter, a literature review of hazard interactions is conducted in order to identify the cascading effects, which are likely to happen in every particular area. The objective of this research is to propose a method to create a geodatabase of natural hazards and to identify those that were triggered as cascades by other disasters in the past utilizing historical data. For instance, considering that wildfires increase the probability of landslides and floods, this relationship can be detected in the geodatabase because in the Municipality of Sithonia, a wildfire was created on June 15, 2014, and several months later landslides and floods were revealed in the same municipality on October 24, 2014, and October 25, 2014.
