Abstract

In this chapter, we introduce two approaches to constructing suboptimal feedback controls for constrained optimal control problems. The first approach is known as the neighbouring extremals approach. The main references for this approach are [33, 107]. In this approach, we will present a solution method for constructing a first-order approximation of the optimal feedback control law for a class of optimal control problems governed by nonlinear continuous-time systems subject to continuous inequality constraints on the control and state. The control law constructed is in a state feedback form, and it is effective to small state perturbations caused by changes on initial conditions and/or modeling uncertainty. It has many potential applications, such as spacecraft guidance and control [140]. For illustration, a generalized Rayleigh problem with a mixed state and control constraint [24] is solved using the proposed method.
