Abstract

This third part deals with expatriate dependency, headquarter trouble, and the impact on German firms caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake. It is evident that firms with a higher dependency on their expatriates experienced fewer employees leaving the subsidiaries. Also, dependency of headquarters on expatriates was positively related to difficulties of retaining those expatriates in Japan. Even today, it is more difficult for firms who rely on expatriates to get them back again to Japan. Also, research related to troubled headquarter-subsidiary relationships brings two results. First, subsidiaries with higher headquarters trouble faced more difficulties holding on to their expatriates. Second, subsidiaries with a higher headquarter trouble report lower problems in case expatriates left Japan.
