Abstract

Among the fresh fruit and vegetable (FFV) exporting countries in Latin America, Peru is an emerging exporter. Following the pioneers of FFV exporters, Chile and Mexico, Peru has been steadily increasing its export after the 2000s. Today, the FFV export industry is one of the most dynamic sectors of the national economy, contributing to the diversification of exports as a leading non-traditional export sector. This chapter explains background information on the development of the industry in the context of the national economy. Some of the factors that aided the development of the industry were government economic reforms in the land market, agricultural promotion, and trade liberalization. Land market reform opened up opportunities for agribusiness companies to enter into agriculture, agricultural promotion reduced production costs, and trade liberalization opened up new markets for fresh exports.
