Abstract

This is followed by the acknowledgement of the historical merits of these two railway pioneers as a German-American pioneering achievement. The fact that, in the beginning of this project, railroads in Noth America were only a thing of hearsay shows how pioneering the project was. When the line was put into operation in 1831, there was only one locomotive imported from England in the USA; at the end of 1833 there were only 17 locomotives, 13 of which were also made in England. After the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the 9-miles, technically challenging Mauch Chunk Railroad, the Little Schuylkill Railroad was only the third steam powered track in the New World. In spite of his success List gave up his positions in Pennsylvania and went back to Germany with the intention of staying here as long as his strength would allow to work on his goal to integrate his know how into the building of a German railway system.
