Friedrich List’s Discovery of a Coal Deposit in Pennsylvania

Abstract

Then the discovery of a mighty anthracite coal deposit by Friedrich List in the area of Blue Mountain in Pennsylvania is reported. After his arrival in Reading, List watched the coal fever with a high level of interest and found that the seams ran parallel to the mountains in a northwesterly direction. That’s why he decided to focus on the valley of Schuylkill. He made a find in the immediate vicinity of the Indian settlement Tamaqua. He wrote in his diary: “I got off the horse to take a closer look. Suddenly, I saw shimmering black rocks. I looked at it and realized that it was coal - wonderful anthrazite coal. I dug deaper and more and more coal appeared. Then I covered the digging area and rode up to the hill that lay before me. I dug again; again. I found coal. I was convinced that I had discovered a coal deposit. I made sure to obscure all traces of my search!”
