Abstract

The struggle of the white settlers with the “red-skins” and List`s attitude to the “Indian Removal Act” of 1830 must not be ignored. Andrew Jackson was the seventh president of the United States; he ruled from 1829 to 1837. Before he became a politician, he was in the military. He fought in various campaigns against the Indians and was given the nickname of the “Indian hater”. The Indians were pushed further and further to the west by the white immigrants; they lived permanently at the borders of their settlements, the so-called frontier. Immedately after taking power, Jackson launched a bill, which has become known as the “Indian Removal Act”. It authorized the President to negociate with the indigenous people for the exchange of settlements in the southeastern, fertile woodland of the southern states for the barren, dry northern territories.
