The First Positive Effects of the Little Schuylkill Railroad

Abstract

The main part concludes with the consideration of the first positive effects of the Little Schuylkill Railroad. The boom in the town of Tamaqua in the first 50 years can be seen in the imposing station building, built in 1874 in the form of a one-story Italian-style brick building. It has, among other things, a separate waiting room for men and women, with the men`s waiting room looking like a Bavarian beer pub and the women’s waiting room looking like a Viennese coffee house. The building served as a railroad station until 1961 and was finally abandoned in 1981. Then it was abandoned to decay until a citizen`s initiative under the slogan “SOS – Save Our Station!” The building was completely restored and reopened at a cost of $ 1.5 million in 2004. It now serves as a cultural and economic legacy of Tamaqua and is a popular restaurant and picnic spot.
