Abstract

In recent years, China has become a major direct investor in the EU by acquiring tech companies. The European institutions have always maintained a regime of openness to direct investment from abroad. At the same time, China’s presence has highlighted that FDI can pose important challenges when investments touch on fundamental and strategic economic interest or national security fields. This chapter presents the recent developments of the EU regulation on FDI screening and the discussion surrounding the Chinese diplomatic initiative in Central Europe. A further focus on Sino-German relation ends the section.
