Abstract

This concluding chapter reviews why and how unions turn to traditional and non-traditional approaches in their responses to globalization. We ask how can unions represent workers at their workplaces while also speaking for and protecting workers in other countries? How will globalization be changed by unions and how will unions be changed by globalization? I emphasize again that globalization calls into question the fundamental union mission and compels unions to choose between being representatives solely of their own members or voices for workers around the globe, whether unionized or not. The future of the union movement hinges on their ability to respond to globalization.
