LATVIA: On Its Way to Developing the Private Sport Sector

Abstract

Latvia regained its independence from the Union of Soviet Socialistic Republics in 1991 and since that the sport sector in Latvia has operated independently in the restored country. The sport sector in Latvia consists of several components. These are governmental and local authorities, non-governmental sport organizations and sport merchants. Regulation of the sport sectors at the governmental level was initiated in 2002 when the Sports Law was obtained. At present sport is an integral part of the society and its operations are regulated by more than 40 regulatory enactments. Sport for the Latvian residents has become a daily component. However, in 2000–2011 the sport sector together with the whole society was influenced by the economic crisis that took place during 2008–2010 and left indelible marks to the common economic situation of the country and the sport sector in general.
