The Dollar Value of an NFL Rivalry

Abstract

We quantify the dollar value of a divisional rivalry between the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers by asking survey respondents how much they would be willing to pay to preserve the two divisional rivalry games played per year. This rivalry faced a credible threat in 2020, because of the Vikings possible relocation due to an impending sale and due to impending NFL divisional realignment. Using 2020 mail order survey data from a random sample of 1400 Minnesota households, split evenly between urban/nonurban households and Contingent Valuation Methodology (CVM), we found that the average willingness to pay (WTP) to preserve two rivalry games per year was $7.16 in 2020 dollars. The aggregate value for all 1,323,569 households in Minnesota in 2020 was $9,476,754. The present value of that amount in 2022 dollars is $946,355.
