The Interruptive Power of COVID-19 Under a Business Continuity Perspective

Abstract

This study discusses the disruptions caused by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) lockdown from the perspective of business continuity management. Shortly after the pandemic outbreak, numerous businesses faced the severe consequences of the sudden loss of customers or interruptions in the supply chain. In this chapter, we systemise these concerns and identify the critical areas of tensions that could potentially increase bankruptcy threats. In this respect, this study provides a better understanding of the directions for effective system interventions that could support business recovery and potentially reduce the macroeconomic impacts resulting from the anxieties of the business community. To draw these conclusions, we first conceptually consider the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak as an interruptive power. Furthermore, we study the key messages behind several global surveys that examined the business community outlook shortly after the lockdown. Finally, we study the interruptive power of COVID-19 by studying the anxieties communicated in the official reports released by public companies in Poland with the application of text mining techniques.
