Community Participation: A Windfall for Corporate Social Responsibility Implementation in Developing Countries

Abstract

Community participation’ in corporate social responsibility implementation is increasingly becoming challenging because of the growing self-interest of firms. However, community participation remains critical for effective and sustainable CSR program implementation. It has been ascertained that barriers during CSR implementation can be attenuated to a large extent if the community actively participates during the CSR implementation process. This empirical paper explores how community participation can be effectively manifested during CSR implementation in developing countries. The study uses thematic analysis of twenty-eight interviews of practicing managers in India. Using empirical data, the study conceptualizes a four-step CSR implementation framework from the community participation perspective. In the process, the paper also identifies barriers during CSR implementation that can be partially mitigated using the proposed framework. We argue that a bottom-up approach through community participation may be the way forward for effective CSR implementation in developing countries.
