Abstract

This article explores the impact of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) on rural labour markets and women’s empowerment in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, India. It suggests that MGNREGA has had a positive impact by providing employment opportunities during lean agricultural seasons and empowering women. Additionally, the Andhra Pradesh Community Managed Natural Farming (APCNF) programme is presented as a feasible strategy to ensure year-round income and mitigate distress migration. Policymakers must prioritize the development of village resources and provide sustainable employment opportunities to achieve long-term poverty alleviation. Integration of MGNREGA and APCNF could further enhance their impact.
