The Adoption of Virtual Reality (VR) in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Practices: An Empirical Study

Abstract

Virtual reality (VR) technology has experienced significant advancements, leading to increased acceptance and use by the scientific community. The technological prowess of VR lies in its high level of intensity, interactivity, and ability to imitate reality for users, making it a viable tool for various applications. The growing commercial interest in VR resulted in increased accessibility and affordability of VR headsets. This article provides an empirical study on how organisations might effectively promote equity, inclusion, and diversity (EDI) using VR education. This study adopts a qualitative methodology through participant observation and semi-structured interviews, exploring their perceptions towards the use of VR for EDI practices. The findings reveal that the use of VR can evoke an emotional response in users, ultimately improving their recognition of EDI misconduct and fostering active involvement in EDI-conscious behaviours. Furthermore, enhanced awareness towards diversity in the workplace appears likely to improve confidence and self-perceived employability.
