Abstract

The world’s third-largest export industry now is tourism, coming in ahead of food and vehicles behind fuels and chemicals. International travel has significantly increased since a few years ago, and in 2022 it will make up 7% of all exports worldwide. The study examined the concept tourism as an enabler of economic sustainability in Europe. Data was collected using a survey questionnaire from 399 tourism professionals in Greece. The study found out that different domestic tourism activities in ecotourism, domestic tourism, and outbound tourism, have a positive influence on economic sustainability in Europe. It was also established that there is a significant relationship between ecotourism activities and economic sustainability in Europe. Due to recent environmental and economic uncertainty, the sustainability of tourism growth has become a global issue that requires current research’s focus as well as the attention of policymakers. This study found that there is strong link between inbound or domestic tourism and the sustainability of the economy. The study suggests that in order to promote economic growth, which will then favorably impact global tourism, European nations ought to promote favorable tourism policies.
