Abstract

Agroecology is an approach that seeks to integrate ecological principles and concepts into agriculture, promoting the sustainability and resilience of food systems. In the context of agroecological transitions, trade-off analysis can be a valuable tool for evaluating and managing the compromises and interactions between different objectives, agricultural practices, and environmental and social impacts. This integrated and transdisciplinary approach is essential for promoting more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems. It recognizes the need to consider various factors, such as environmental sustainability, agricultural productivity, social and economic justice, system resilience, food nutritional quality, transition costs, local culture and knowledge, and consumer acceptance. When applying trade-off analysis, it is crucial to involve relevant stakeholders to ensure that decisions reflect broad considerations and meet the proposed overall objectives. Effective methods to engage stakeholders in this process include meetings, individual interviews, focus groups, questionnaires, participatory workshops, online platforms, and collaborative tools. Additionally, developing transparent presentations and reports that highlight the trade-off analysis conducted is important to ensure iterative feedback throughout the process, allowing stakeholders to review measures and adjust to new data and information. Review and validation sessions are vital to ensure everyone’s involvement in decision-making. Only in this way is it possible to make informed decisions that maximize environmental and social benefits while minimizing the inevitable trade-offs between different objectives.
