Abstract

The purpose of this research is threefold. Firstly, it examines the impact of ethical leadership on employees’ psychological empowerment, intrapreneurial behavior, and work–life balance. Secondly, it examines the impact of employees’ psychological empowerment on their intrapreneurial behavior and work–life balance. Lastly, it investigates the mediating role of psychological empowerment between ethical leadership and outcomes (employees’ intrapreneurial behavior and work–life balance). Data were collected from employees of software houses and the telecom sector of Pakistan. A sample of 184 IT professionals was obtained for the final data analysis using a snowball sampling technique. The hypotheses were tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings indicate that ethical leadership is a source of promoting employees’ intrapreneurial behavior and work–life balance among IT professionals. Interestingly, the results indicate no direct relationship between ethical leadership and intrapreneurial behavior, but it only exists via psychological empowerment. Results also confirm the mediating role of psychological empowerment between ethical leadership and both outcomes (employees’ intrapreneurial behavior and work–life balance). To date, little effort has been made to investigate the intrapreneurial behavior of employees working under ethical leadership. Hence, this study makes a significant contribution to the existing body of literature.
