Abstract

Challenges to teacher’s identity in online environment are considered in the paper. Teacher’s identity dissonance which appeared due to stress caused by rapid transition from face-to-face education to e-learning has a negative impact on the education process efficiency and satisfaction. Foreign language and music teachers’ identities are compared, and aspects of their identities affected by stress and dissonance are detailed in the article. Psychological and practical solutions to manage stress and develop a holistic online identity are proposed. Psychological solutions include recognizing primus inter pares factor and developing positive attitude to it, while practical ones are based on inserting human component in online environment. The solutions are contextualized by teacher-student interaction. Basing on the fact that online education is here to stay, apart from having a stable classroom identity it is necessary to develop a healthy online identity in order to make both processes equally efficient and satisfying.
